Caring for your Parents

Many adults feel uneasy about their aging parents especially for this living alone. We just don’t know when it’s the right time to intervene because it’s hard to interfere with their independence and privacy. Unfortunately by the time we get involved it’s too late and often due to an emergency or tragic event.

Caring for our parents requires some planning and here are a few thing to consider;

As our parents age, they are more prone to health problems, forgetfulness and medication errors. Make sure they regular medical check-ups, take the right medications and follow their medication schedule, also make sure to have their vision and hearing checked and review their diet and eating habits. Use pill boxes to arrange the medications.

Are your parents living in a safe environment?

Make sure that your parents’ home is free from clutter that can lead to a fall, remove electric cords that can cause them to trip, and tape down throw rugs that can cause them to slip. Insure that the lighting inside and outside the home is adequate, that all stairs and ramps are secure with grab bars as needed. Test smoke alarms and home security systems.
