This is an awkward situation for me, today I visited my Mothers doctor for the first time. We have not been to the doctor together since I was a kid. Only this time there is a complete role reversal I had to the adult and my mother the child.

The reason for the doctor visit is for me to find out what’s going on with my mother, she is having problems with her memory and we have noticed that over the last year it’s only getting worst. The doctor has her on medication for memory loss along with other medications and vitamins. I always consider my mother to be a healthy person with good eating habits, she loves to exercise and maintains herself in great shape for her age. Life for her was not easy she worked hard and raise a large family and over the last 25 years she has been the primary caregiver for my father whom suffers from Parkinson Disease. I always pictured my mother as a superwoman and that would last forever.

During the doctor we discussed the following;

  • Medications: We went over all medications don’t leave anything out including vitamins. I asked the doctor for help with a medication schedule and for someone to monitor and arrange medications in pill boxes at home.
  • Memory Test: Ask the doctor if they have done any Memory Test is so ask about the results.
  • Head Scan: The doctor ordered a CT Scan, to see what is going on with the brain.
  • Labs: He ordered standard labs.

As we age we need more and more help, in the case of my mother she is experiencing memory loss is forgetting to drink her medications. The results appear to be worst then what they actually are. To fix this we are going to manage medications with pill boxes and follow-up visits to her doctor.  This may involve a caregiver to step in and help to manage and watch over them as she gets older and older.
